Approximately half a million men undergo vasectomy in the United States annually. Both reproductive urologists, Dr. Kavoussi and Dr. Machen, perform vasectomies daily in-office and have a great deal of expertise in offering a minimally invasive, comfortable, and quick procedure, with low complication rates and excellent outcomes. The final step to confirm sterility is the post-vasectomy semen analysis (PVSA). As an expert in the field, Dr. Kavoussi co-authored a study on PVSA. This study presents a detailed step by step protocol for laboratories performing PVSA, such as the ones in house at ACVVR. The study also includes a guide for reporting and interpretation of the test results, with recommendations for proficiency testing and competency assessment for performing laboratory technicians performing PVSA. The study also reviewed global attitudes towards PVSA testing.
